National Association of Fellowships Advisors
The National Association of Fellowships Advisor (NAFA) is an organization of professionals in higher education who work with students competing for national scholarships and fellowships. The purpose of the association is to improve the educational experience of students willing to take initiative to apply for awards administered outside of individual institutions by providing advisors resources, professional development experiences, and ethical guidelines for scholarship advising.
NAFA developed out of a series of productive conversations among advisors at Foundation-sponsored workshops and conferences. Participants expressed interest that the professional community started at these events find a home of its own. A group of scholarship advisors responded by founding NAFA in May, 2000. NAFA invites institutional membership of colleges and universities and welcomes as affiliate members the national scholarship and fellowship programs.
The NAFA newsletter, published on-line semi-annually, features articles from fellowships advisors, scholars, finalists, and program staff on topics ranging from reflections of an advisor's first year to a scholar's advice on preparing for interviews; from how to get colleagues to write effective letters of recommendation to successful institutions and their "secrets".
