Melissa was raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and learned at a young age the devastating effects of poverty. She joined the Coast Guard Academy where she created a diversity awareness day for lesbians and gays in the military along with a day for religious diversity. As a future officer of the US Coast Guard, she would like to pursue a JD/MPP. She hopes to one day serve the State of Michigan as a Congresswoman. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, writing, and playing the piano.
